Official Opening of Dovedale Leisure Centre After Refurbishments

Dovedale Leisure Centre, based at the Moulsham Street campus of Chelmsford College, is operated in partnership with both the College and Chelmsford City Council serving both the learners and public at varying times. What was once an outdated sports hall and compact uninspiring gym now sees major improvements. The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Jannetta Sosin, joined staff from the College and Chelmsford City Council and members of the wider public on the 26th February to unveil Dovedale for its official opening.

David Warnes, Principal and CEO of Chelmsford College, proudly stood beside Councillor Jannetta Sosin as she cut the ribbon to officially open the new centre. Attendees were then taken to tour the new facilities to see first-hand the wonderful improvements that have taken place. Since the site was constructed 1973, it has only since seen minor upgrades meaning the refurbishments were fully welcomed with amazing reactions from guests.

The Leisure Centre now boasts an extended modern fully equipped gym with the latest Technogym and Exigo machines, a restored sports hall, two fitness studios with LED and AV lighting and sound system, updated squash courts, modern changing facilities and a brand-new reception area.

After touring the different amenities, guests gathered in one of the fitness studios for speeches from the Council and David Warnes. Both Chelmsford College and Chelmsford City Council are delighted to continue this partnership and look forward to seeing Dovedale being used by the College learners and members of the public during their exclusive use timings. After hearing the speeches, guests were free to tuck into the tasty table spread kindly cooked and prepared by the College’s refectory team. With full bellies and a new-found enthusiasm for Dovedale Leisure Centre, guests left the event feeling content and proud of its new and improved local facility.

The improvements couldn’t be timely with Chelmsford College soon to be running brand-new performing arts courses from September 2026. Not only will sports learners benefit from using the facilities, but the new performing arts learners will also enjoy learning in and using the centre too.

"This is a proud moment for Chelmsford College as we celebrate the opening of the new Dovedale Leisure Centre, bringing with it an opportunity to enhance the delivery of technical skills in sport, physical activity and performing arts."

"Our co investment with Chelmsford City Council demonstrates what can be achieved when local partners work with a common purpose and a long-term vision for our students and the local community".

"I am very grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life and I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have for many years to come."

David Warnes, Principal and CEO of the College

"The team and I can’t wait to welcome back all our regulars and welcome in newbies, too! Dovedale’s new and improved facilities are here to make sure your workout is the highlight of your day, whether you’ve been exercising for years or you’re turning over a new leaf."

Richard Nicholas, Centre Manager from Chelmsford City Council

A big thanks is also owed to project partners Ingleton Wood LLP and Stroods Specialist Contractors, who led the refurbishment and remodelling, delivering the project on time and on budget.
