Chelmsford College Students Exhibit Their ‘Treasures’ at Museum of Chelmsford

What does treasure mean to you? 17 Chelmsford College Level 3 Film and Photography students had the chance to answer this through their own exhibition, What Matters Most, currently being shown at the Museum of Chelmsford from the 18th September to the 23rd November 2026.

Inspired by the Museum's display of the Great Baddow Hoard, a collection of 933 Iron Age gold coins acquired with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the students were challenged to look beyond traditional ideas of treasure and explore what they personally value today as their ‘treasure’.

This has resulted in a collection of photography and creative work that is as varied as the students who created it. From treasured memories and prized possessions to nature and relationships, each student brought their own personality and experiences to the theme.

For two of the students, Lily-Maye and Ruby, their different hobbies became the starting point for a collaborative piece. With Lily-Maye's love of football and Ruby’s passion for fashion, they brought their two worlds together to create a shared piece of what matters most to them. “It’s a really exciting experience and I’m really proud of us for what we have made” said 17 year old Lily-Maye.

Meanwhile, their peer Henry took a different approach, creating work centred around his musical instrument perfectly captured within an open field. He described the project as "a really positive experience to have my exhibition shown to the public."

Guided throughout the process by their tutor Erin Hanlon, Interim Deputy Head of Department - Creative Industries and Performing Arts, she commented on the exhibition saying "I am so excited to showcase our Level 3 Photography learners' work at the Museum of Chelmsford. In celebration of the Museum acquiring the Great Baddow Hoard of Iron Age coins, our students explored the theme of treasure through different lenses and all portrayed What Matters Most to them in this exhibition."

What Matters Most offers visitors the chance to see treasure from a completely different perspective and reflect on what they value themselves. Situated in the heart of Chelmsford, the Museum of Chelmsford offers a great setting for an enjoyable visit, with its surrounding grounds and on-site café making it a perfect day out for families, friends and anyone looking for something different to explore.
