Chelmsford College Reaches Finals in 2024 Green Gown Awards
Triumph once again for Chelmsford College in its sustainability journey! With great help from the College’s systems development team, Chelmsford College has successfully landed itself a place in the finals of the category "Creating Impact".
10 months ago, the Principal David Warnes tasked the team to create a digital solution that engaged, informed and lead the way for staff and learners to become more sustainable. Inspiringly, just 10 months later, the College now has its very own Nexus app (developed entirely in-house), that focuses on sustainability and could soon be award winning!
Every Monday, the Nexus app introduces 8 new sustainable pledges complete with carbon savings and detailed information, to inspire and guide eco-friendly actions. Tackling sustainability with a high-spirited and communal approach, staff, learners and whole tutor groups can track their progress and compete with peers, through dynamic leaderboards. Working through the ranks, users will accumulate points that can earn them badges and progress them from Level 1 to 4. Once Levels 2, 3 and 4 have been successfully met, users will unlock exciting prizes. An example of this is the Level 2 Bricklaying learners and tutors enjoying an active day out at Ninja Warrior Chelmsford for being the tutor group that earned the most Nexus points.
From September 2023 to May 2024, the learners pledges are projected to save over 150,000kg of carbon emissions whilst staff pledges will also save an impressive 2,925kg. It is more than fair to deduce that this project has positively initiated a shift in the College’s attitudes and understanding of sustainability.
David Warnes praised the success saying "What a brilliant achievement for Chelmsford College. A huge congratulations to the systems development team too as with their help, the competition to be at the top of the Nexus leaderboard is fierce".
