Chelmsford College Bricklaying Competition Builds Industry Links
Chelmsford College’s Bricklaying Department put students’ skills to the test last week as Level 2 students took part in a decorative brickwork competition, supported by local industry partners Chandler and Toolchimp.
The week-long competition challenged students to create decorative brickwork panels using patterns such as basketweave and herringbone. Their work was judged by members of the College’s Executive Leadership Team and industry representatives, including Chandler and Toolchimp.
Both businesses have helped make the competition possible, with Chandler generously donating the bricks and Toolchimp providing additional materials, including boards. Toolchimp is also offering all Chelmsford College learners 10% off orders, alongside an ongoing 5% discount.
The support forms part of the College’s commitment to working closely with employers to ensure learners gain relevant practical experience and develop the skills needed for careers in construction.
Phil Clark, Vice Principal Curriculum (Study Programmes) at Chelmsford College, said: "We are incredibly grateful to Chandler and Toolchimp for their generous support of our Bricklaying Department and for becoming valued industry partners. Strong partnerships are essential in ensuring our curriculum reflects the needs of industry and gives learners access to the tools, technologies and expertise they need to succeed. This support will have a direct impact on their learning experience, helping them develop the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours required for careers in construction. By working together, we are helping to inspire and develop the next generation of skilled bricklayers and construction professionals. We look forward to building a long and successful partnership that creates opportunities for our learners and supports the future workforce of our region."
The competition gave students the opportunity to put their skills into practice and demonstrate their attention to detail. It also highlights the value of industry support in creating meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities that help prepare college students for the workplace.
