Achieve, Don't Leave: What to Do If Your College Course Isn't Right for You

Starting college is a big step and choosing a course can sometimes feel like choosing the direction of your entire future.

But what happens if, a few weeks or months into your course, you start to wonder whether you have made the right decision?

Perhaps the course is not what you expected. You might have discovered that your interests lie somewhere else, be struggling to stay motivated or have started thinking about a completely different career.

If that sounds familiar, remember this: do not simply give up.

At Chelmsford College, we want learners to Achieve, Don’t Leave! And if your current course really is not right for you, think Swap, Don’t Drop.

Changing direction does not mean you have failed. It may simply mean you have learnt more about yourself and what you want to do next.

Not Everyone Has Their Future Figured Out Yet

There can be a lot of pressure when you leave school to know exactly what career you want, which course you should study and what you want your future to look like.

The reality is that not everyone has it all figured out at 16, 17 or 18.

Your interests can change. You can discover careers you had never previously considered. A subject you enjoyed at school may feel completely different when studied in greater depth, while something you had never thought about before could suddenly become an area you want to explore.

And that is okay.

Changing your mind about a course or career does not mean that you have made a mistake. College is also an opportunity to learn more about your strengths, interests and ambitions.

What matters is what you do next.

Before You Leave, Talk to Someone

If you are becoming disinterested in your course or are thinking about leaving College altogether, try not to make the decision on your own.

You may be struggling for reasons that can be resolved without changing course.

You may be finding a particular part of the course difficult, struggling with motivation, or simply going through a period when you are unsure what you want to do.

Speak to a member of the Chelmsford College team and explain how you are feeling. Chelmsford College has a dedicated Careers Advice Zone who provide quality information, advice and careers guidance services to anyone considering or enrolled at the College. You can contact them by emailing careersadvicezone@chelmsford.ac.uk or by telephone 01245 293031.

Sometimes, getting additional support or talking through your concerns can help you see your course differently and give you the confidence to continue.

If, after talking it through, you still feel that your current course is not the right fit, there may be other options available.

Achieve, Don’t Leave

Leaving your course does not necessarily mean you need to leave College.

There is a wide range of courses and study routes available at Chelmsford College, and another subject may be much better suited to your interests, skills and future plans.

That is why we encourage learners to think Achieve, Don’t Leave.

Perhaps you started your course intending to follow one career but have since discovered another industry that interests you more. Or you may have realised that you prefer practical learning to a more classroom-based course.

Whatever the reason, speak to us before making the decision to leave.

Depending on course availability, your circumstances, and where you are in the academic year, you may be able to explore an alternative route that keeps you progressing towards a qualification and your future career.

There will naturally be moments during college when things feel difficult.

A challenging assignment, a subject you are struggling with or a temporary loss of motivation does not always mean you have chosen the wrong course.

Sometimes, the best option is to ask for support and give yourself the opportunity to overcome the challenge.

But if your interests have genuinely changed or you believe another course would be better suited to you, explore those options before deciding to leave.

Don't Let Your Grades Stop You From Exploring Your Options

You may already have another course in mind but assume that you will not be able to study it because of your GCSE grades or previous qualifications.

Do not rule yourself out without speaking to us first.

Chelmsford College offers different entry levels and starting points, including courses at Levels 1, 2 and 3.

This means that even if you are not currently able to start at the level you originally had in mind, there may be another route that allows you to build your knowledge, skills and qualifications before progressing further.

Everyone's starting point is different.

The important thing is to find a route that suits you and gives you the opportunity to progress.

It's Not Too Late to Change Direction

Realising that you have chosen the wrong course can be worrying, particularly if the academic year has already started.

You might feel you have left it too late and that your only options are to continue with a course you don't enjoy or leave college completely.

That does not necessarily have to be the case.

The sooner you speak to someone, the sooner we can help you understand your options.

Where appropriate and subject to course availability, there may still be opportunities to change direction.

Even if an immediate course change is not possible, talking to the College can help you understand the best next step rather than simply walking away from your education.

You do not need to have your entire future planned out today, and it is okay for your ambitions to change as you learn more about yourself and the opportunities available to you.

If you are currently studying at Chelmsford College and are having doubts about your course, speak to your tutor or a member of the College team.

A conversation could be all it takes to help you find the right way forward.
