Chelmsford College Hosts Digital and AI Conference For All Staff

With the digital world constantly evolving and fast, Chelmsford College held a dedicated Digital and AI Conference for all staff on the 27th March. The day was designed to ensure that every member of the college community (learners, teachers, learning support, business support and professional services) all feel informed, confident and empowered to make the most of the digital opportunities ahead.

With the topic of artificial intelligence often met with fear and uncertainty, Chelmsford College held a variety of breakout sessions and talks to highlight to staff that AI is not a threat in their place of work, but a tool. This helped alleviate concerns because the day helped showcase how it can enhance the way they work, teach, support and collaborate. Tangible action came out of the day with the Senior Leadership Team meeting to decide how to move forward in implementing the College’s Digital Transformation Strategy and agreeing on a clear policy on AI usage before the tech develops further.

The day opened with an online Town Hall led by Principal and CEO David Warnes, who welcomed staff and set the tone for the programme ahead. This was followed by team discussions on their hopes and fear of digital tech and AI which were shared college wide. In what was a first since September 2024, all staff then gathered in the newly refurbished Sports Hall to hear talks from Sean Parker, the Director of MIS and Digital Transformation at Chelmsford College, and from an external speaker, Fela Sowande, who is a Modern Workplace AI Specialist working for Westcoast Cloud. Both gave valuable talks which helped identify the direction both the College and the wider landscape are moving towards in terms of AI. Staff then enjoyed two breakout sessions which were tailored according to roles and staff members, ensuring everyone made the most out of the day.

Overall, the day was innovative and a success for the College. In what can feel uneasy for some staff, the day helped increase optimism on how both their work life and personal life can improve through digital tools.
