Chelmsford College Learners Lead the Way in Community Engagement

Chelmsford College learners made meaningful differences on the 3rd April with a dedicated Youth Social Action Day. In what was an inaugural event for the College, learners were delighted to be off timetable for the day and dedicate their time to impactful activities to give back to the community instead.

With the spring sunny weather perfectly setting the scene, the day was filled with joyousness and collaboration. The various academic departments came up with an array of creative ideas to keep the learners entertained and engaged for the day, all while making a positive impact.

Highlights included childcare learners hosting a lively mini sports day for the Dovedale Nursery children which they thoroughly enjoyed! David Warnes, the Principal and CEO of Chelmsford College, joined learners and the campus officers for some plogging, helping keep the grounds tidy while remaining active. The ChangeMaker learners engaged in thought-provoking discussions in a conference externally hosted by Unloc, helping them think about ways to develop in their roles as college ChangeMakers. Helping fuel that conference and other important meetings were the catering learners who were busy whipping up delicious sandwiches, cakes and treats for participants to enjoy. The public services department kindly washed cars in the college carpark with all donations inspiringly going to Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund. Meanwhile, other learners, including Sports, Bespoke Provision and Creative Industries, helped refurbish and organise the College's sports hall, secret garden and sustainable fashion shop, contributing to the Chelmsford College ethos.

As well as all of the amazing work that happened onsite at the college, learners and staff also went offsite to support the wider community too! This included the estates' team and various learners visiting Ongar Sports and Social Club to help out with the painting and decorating of facilities. Gary Holland, the Estates and Sustainability Manager, expressed how proud he was of the learners with different members of the public even approaching him to commend the attitude and enthusiasm of the learners! Our RE-START/King’s Trust department also led an impactful road improvement project, seeing the social action spread across all different areas.

Chelmsford College would like to thank everyone who helped make this day a success from the staff, learners and external companies. The joint enthusiasm really helped make a difference and made for some memorable moments. With Chelmsford College’s dedication to giving back and enriching the overall college experience, the social action continued on the 4th April. This was with all staff off timetable to visit their industries to remain up to date with skills and knowledge or out volunteering for meaningful causes. Overall, the term ended with appreciation and high spirits for all.
