This Apprenticeship is for those who want to work in the construction industry as a Bricklayer. A Bricklayer will be laying bricks, blocks, and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls.
Study Overview
The broad purpose of the occupation is to lay bricks and blocks, sometimes utilising modern methods of construction and pre-manufactured elements to construct walls. Bricklayers tasks include:
- Simple setting out
- Preparation of mortar
- Using a trowel to lay bricks and mortar
- Apply damp-proof materials to complete the project to the specification and required design
- Use spirit levels and plumb lines to check building alignment
- Use hammers and chisels to shape and trim bricks and blocks.
Bricklayers typically work outdoors on construction sites, in most weathers and at height.
Duties as a Bricklayer can also include:
- Work in compliance with occupational health, safety and environmental requirements to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of self and others at all times. Report in a timely manner any non-compliance against the construction programme to the appropriate person.
- Carry out their work conforming to all current and relevant building regulations, quality standards, and work instructions.
- Work to the construction programme, adapting to changes in schedule and requirements where necessary.
- Prepare the work site including setting out the work and the selection of materials and tools appropriate to the project.
- Use the appropriate tools and equipment to construct walls with brick and block to industry standards.
- Carry out minor repairs or modifications to masonry.
- Collaborate with stakeholders, including clients and other construction trades.
- Maintain a clear and safe work site at all times, disposing of waste appropriately and sustainably.
- Carry out continuous professional development to maintain knowledge of current and future developments affecting the role.
- Receive, unload, move and lift materials to the site for installation following good handling practices preventing injury or damage.
Progression and Employment Opportunities
On completion of this standard, some apprentices may progress to higher level construction standards or continue working as a Bricklayer in the construction industry.
The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Skilled Worker’ standard, which is widely accepted in the sector as a ‘licence to operate’ in a skilled construction trade.
Additional Qualifications Studied
All Level 1 learners will also complete a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment to allow you to access a CSCS card which you will need to be able to go on site.
