Is this course for me?
This is an introduction to the construction industry, with three essential core units (health and safety, communication, and building technology) and then specialist Carpentry & Joinery units to give you the skills to do the job.
Study Overview
A carpentry apprentice will understand the principles of health, safety and welfare and how these are applied in the workplace as well as how to communicate with others and comply with instructions. They will also understand the different techniques used to move, handle and store materials and interpret and use relevant product information. They will learn to carry out a range of job tasks including: measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, splicing, finishing, positioning and securing. They will learn how to install door and window frames, door and hatch linings, floor joist coverings, straight partitions and straight staircases, as well as how to install doors, ironmonger and various other skills. Learning how to use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated equipment is also key.
A Site Carpenter will be expected to:
- Show effective communication; oral, written, listening, body language and presentation
- Work effectively with others with limited supervision
- Take responsibility for completing their own work
- Use clear and valid reasoning when making decisions, Undertake the work in a reliable and productive manner, Use own time effectively to complete work on schedule, Be able to adjust to changes to work instructions
Progression and Employment Opportunities
On completion of this standard, some apprentices may progress onto the Advanced Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry and Joinery, or secure employment as a Site Carpenter or Architectural Joiner.
The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Skilled Worker’ standard, which is widely accepted in the sector as a ‘licence to operate’ in a skilled construction trade.
Additional Qualifications Studied
All Level 1 learners will also complete a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment to allow you to access a CSCS card which you will need to be able to go on site.
