Access to Higher Education (HE) courses are most suitable for 19+ learners who may like to undertake a university level course but did not gain the required qualifications during their school years. These courses are designed to offer you an alternative pathway to Higher Education, equipping you with the knowledge and qualifications needed to pursue your academic and career ambitions.
If you have always been interested in a career as a health professional, you may already have some GCSEs but lack the appropriate Level 3 qualification. If you meet the entry requirements, this course could be the perfect starting point for you. The Access to Higher Education (Health Professions) course will provide you with a broad foundation to progress towards a degree and potentially a career in a health-related field.
The course is delivered remotely, giving you the flexibility to learn at your own pace and from the comfort of your home. You will engage in self-directed learning through an online platform, with support from a progress tutor. To participate, you will need a computer and internet access to access course materials and complete assessments. Additionally, you will receive guidance on university applications and study skills to help you succeed and progress toward a degree in a health profession.
Study Overview
Throughout the course, you will focus on developing essential study skills for university. These skills will be applied across various modules, which include topics such as the history of the NHS, the roles and responsibilities of health professionals, and body systems. All modules are assessed through coursework, which you will submit via the online learning platform.
Progression and Employment Opportunities
Upon completion of the Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Professions), you will be equipped to make an informed decision about your career path and apply for a degree programme in a health profession. Opportunities exist to progress to a wide range of health-related degrees, such as nursing, occupational therapy, operating department practice, physiotherapy, radiotherapy, counselling or psychotherapy, dental nursing, and paramedic science.

If you wish to progress to midwifery or some nursing degrees, you will need a GCSE in Science (grade 4-9 or A-C). Some health-related degree courses may require 5 or 6 GCSEs (grade 4-9 or A-C), including English Language, Maths, and Science. You are advised to check university entry requirements carefully.
