Is this course for me?

This course focuses on science and its application to biomedical science. You will learn through laboratory-based work and class-based activities that are supported by independent study. A number of our activities are based on real workplace situations, related activities and demands. If you want to progress to a health care degree or science-based degree, then this science diploma is for you. Learners may also have the opportunity to attend enrichment activities. If you are unsure exactly what type of science you want to do, then this course offers a broad base, giving you more choices for progression; this also allows you to hone in on specific topics to identify which aspect you most enjoy and would like to pursue. 

Study Overview

This is a 2 year full time course and is equivalent to 3 A levels.

If you are interested in working in the healthcare profession, this course will give you an overview and insight into some of the techniques and tools used within Biomedical Science. It also includes core sciences to underpin the specialist knowledge.

You will study a range of units that may include physiology of the human body, biochemistry, microbiology, biomedical science, genetics and chemistry.

Progression and Employment Opportunities

You may progress to higher education, employment, or apprenticeships. Biomedical Science is suitable for you to progress to degrees such as paramedic science, radiography, physiotherapy, podiatry, nursing, midwifery and biomedical science.

Skills in science are transferable and highly sought after by employers. There is a growing need for healthcare within the UK as the population lives longer. Currently, 38% of the population in England are over 50. This brings with it a large demand for health and allied services. The range of units within the course will allow students to apply for jobs in the healthcare sector. Many learners progress to university, gaining science-related degrees, and then progress to employment.

Additional Qualifications Studied

If you do not have English Language at grades 9-4 you will be required to study GCSE English Language.
