Engineering Technicians take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake within the limits of their personal authority. They also need to be able to demonstrate a core set of behaviours in order to be competent in their job role, complement wider business strategy and development. This will enable them to support their long-term career development. Engineered and manufactured products and systems that Engineering Technicians work on could involve mechanical, electrical, electronic, electromechanical and fluid power components/systems.
The pathways we offer in this standard will be: Machinist (Advanced Manufacturing Engineering), Product Design and Development Technician, Technical Support Technician.
Study Overview
Knowledge and Skills: There are core knowledge and skills that every Engineering Technician will need to know, no matter what their chosen pathway is. All pathways will have their own set of knowledge and skills specialist to their area that the apprentice will cover. Every Engineering Technician will need to under the importance of complying with regulations. They will need to understand general engineering/manufacturing mathematical and scientific knowledge, as well understanding typical problems that may arise. The apprentice will need to know about the common materials used in the sector, the diagnostic methods used to help solve problems and the importance of only using current approved processes and procedures. They should also understand the different roles and functions in the organisation and why it is important for an organisation to continually review their processes and procedures. An apprentice will also learn core skills such as obtaining, checking and using the appropriate documentations. They will also work safely at all times, whilst undertaking the work activity using correct processes, procedures and equipment and carrying out required checks. Other skills include dealing promptly and effectively with problems, completing any required documentation and restoring the work area on completion of the activity.
Expectations: An Engineering Technician Apprentice will be expected to:

Progression and Employment Opportunities
Progression to further study could include a HNC/D, a degree or opportunities into higher apprenticeships.
