This is a one year introduction to the construction industry, with three essential core units (health and safety, communication and building technology) and then specialist units attached to your chosen pathway to give you the skills to do the job.

This course is an introduction only and progression is essential to gain semi-skilled and skilled status.

Study Overview

The three core units to each pathway are:

  • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and Associated Industries
  • Knowledge of Technical Information, Quantities and Communication with Others
  • Knowledge of Construction Technology

You will also learn about woodworking joints, how to maintain and use hand tools, and how to maintain and use portable power tools.

Specific units for your chosen Carpentry and Joinery pathway include:

  • Produce Woodworking Joints
  • Maintain and Use Carpentry and Joinery Hand Tools
  • Prepare and Use Carpentry and Joinery Portable Power Tools

 

 

Employment & Labour Market Opportunities

On successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma you can enter into employment (when an employer/apprenticeship is available) and continue one day a week on a part time Level 2 Diploma programme, supported by CITB. Alternatively you can return to college full time for the Level 2 Diploma, extending your skills and knowledge before entering employment. You may also want to consider an Intermediate apprenticeship.

Maths and English - Take it Seriously!

At Chelmsford College we are dedicated to helping all our learners achieve their ambitions and we acknowledge that in order to do well, some of our learners may need extra support in maths and/or English.

We provide specialist teaching as a compulsory part of the study programme for all learners who have not achieved a grade C at GCSE in these subjects and we all take maths and English seriously.

To have completed secondary education up to and including Year 11. There are no formal entry requirements although applicants will need to be assessed at interview.
