Engineering Operatives are predominantly involved in engineering operations which are key to the success of the Manufacturing and Engineering sector allowing employers to grow their business while developing a work force with the relevant skills and knowledge to enhance the sustain the sector.

The role covers a wide range of common and job specific skills sets that can be transferred across the manufacturing engineering industry sectors during the course of their careers. Dependent on the sector that they are employed in, there may be subtle differences in terms of composition and application of the job role specific skills and knowledge they will require, however the core skills and knowledge will be the same regardless of the sector/area they work in.

Study Overview

Knowledge and Skills: An Engineering Operative will have the following core requirements, however there are specialist requirements for each specialist job role that they will have to complete also. The specialist job roles include: maintenance roles; mechanical manufacturing; electrical and electronic engineering; fabrication roles; those working within materials, processing or finishing; technical support roles. All Engineering Operatives will need to understand how to obtain the necessary job instructions, engineering drawing and specifications, as well as how to interpret them. They’ll need to understand all the relevant regulations, their individual role and responsibilities within the organisation. They should know about engineering operational practices, processes and procedures as well as any problems that may occur and how they can be avoided. An Engineering Operative will be able to work safely at all times, identify and deal appropriately with any risks or problems within the limits of their responsibility and demonstrate effective communication skills. They will also be able to complete appropriate documentation, obtain and follow the correct documentation, specifications and work instructions and work efficiently and effectively at all times.

Progression and Employment Opportunities

Could progress into apprenticeships could include the standards in Engineering Design and Draughtsperson, Engineering Fitter, Engineering Technician or Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician. Further study could include a Level 3 BTEC in Engineering as a full or part time student.
