English for UK residents

Skills for Life and Skills for Work courses are offered at a subsidised rate for those who live and/or work in the UK and who meet the relevant criteria. These include:

  • Asylum seekers and refugees
  • Migrant workers who have lived in an EU country for 3 years (not solely for education purposes) before coming to the UK
  • Spouses and dependent relatives of UK citizens

Proof of status such as a passport, work permit, NI card, marriage certificate, will be required before enrolment.

Remission of fees applies to those who are in receipt of means tested benefits. Evidence of this will be required.

Before beginning a Skills for Life course you will be asked to attend an assessment appointment, which will include a computer based language test, an interview and a short writing task. This will help us to find the right course for you.

Courses range from Elementary (Entry Level 1) to Intermediate (Level 1) and aim to develop skills in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. These classes are held on one day a week for five hours.

Students who enrol for Skills for Life classes will be expected to attend on a regular basis and must take a relevant Skills for Life Examination, as recommended by their tutor, at the end of each course.
