International Applications

Guidance Notes

Please read the following information carefully before proceeding with your application for a full-time course of study. It is very important that you provide all the information requested. This will enable us to process your application quickly.

Each application will be dealt with on an individual basis. We will consider all the information and judge in good faith, both the appropriateness of your application and whether we believe the course would benefit you. If we believe it is inappropriate to offer you a place on your chosen course we will try to suggest a realistic alternative either at Chelmsford College or elsewhere.

If we are able to offer you a place, you will receive a letter of acceptance which you must return to the college with the stipulated deposit if required . You will then receive a further letter confirming your place on the course. Applicants from outside the EU may need this letter for entry clearance to the UK. All visas and passport arrangements are the responsibility of the applicant.

Immigration and entry clearance

Nationals seeking to enter the UK for more than six months from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and the USA will need to obtain prior entry clearance. Non-visa nationals from countries other than those above seeking leave to enter the UK for more than six months need to apply to the Immigration and Nationality Directorate for a residence permit after arrival . It is best to get entry clearance before arrival. The use of the entry clearance system can help to avoid difficulty at the port/airport of arrival and prevent a wasted journey. On arrival in the UK you must obtain leave to enter the country from the Immigration Officer. You will be required to produce your passport, the official letter of acceptance from the College, your receipt for the deposit paid and evidence of your ability to meet the full costs of the course and support yourself.

Please note that immigration rules require an individual under the age of 18 at the time of entering the UK to have written permission from a parent/guardian allowing them to come to the UK for study.

As visa requirements and government regulations are constantly changing you are advised to visit the websites below or contact your nearest UK Diplomatic Mission for up-to-date information.

Police registration

Nationals of certain countries may have a stamp in their passport requiring registration with the police within seven days of arrival in the UK. To register you will need your passport, two passport-sized photographs and sufficient money for the registration fee. If you change your address during your stay in the UK, you must notify the police so that the change can be listed in your registration certificate. The nearest police station to college is:

Chelmsford Police Station, New Street, Chelmsford (Tel: 01245 491212)

Financial arrangements

Students should take note of the following guidelines on banking:

  • Open an account with a multi-national bank in your home country so you can use its ATMs in the UK
  • Before opening an account, check if money can be transferred into it from outside the UK
  • Try to open an account overseas with a bank that offers internet banking
  • Bring a banker’s draft made out for the exact sum of your accommodation, tuition fees etc. If you are being sponsored, it is not possible to cash a banker’s draft or cheque in the UK
  • Do not carry large amounts of money in cash
  • Get a credit card
  • Bring enough travellers’ cheques to last the entire period of your stay in the UK
