Janice Maclean
Chair
Janice Maclean, Chair of the Corporation Board and Chair of the Quality and Learners Committee. Janice has lived with her family in Chelmsford since 1978, working for Chelmsford Borough Council and Essex County Council before joining the staff of Anglia Ruskin University. At Anglia Ruskin, as Deputy Dean of Students, she was responsible for Student Support Services, student feedback and the quality of the student experience. Now semi-retired, she undertakes consultancy projects and as a Chartered Town Planner lectures part-time to post graduate students at the University.
Elaine Oddie
Vice-Chair
Elaine Oddie , Vice-Chair of the Corporation Board and Chair of the Personnel, Finance and General Purposes Committee, is a Chartered Accountant who has been a partner in Essex accountancy firms since 1984. She is currently a partner in NSO Associates LLP, a firm in Springfield Road, Chelmsford. She is the Honorary Treasurer of several local and national organisations, and a Trustee of a Chelmsford-based Charity.
David Law
Principal
David Law, Principal and Chief Executive, is a graduate of the Universities of Wales and Keele. He has been working in Further Education since 1982 and has been Principal of Chelmsford College since 2001, having originally joined in 1996. He has held governor positions and trusteeships in a variety of schools, colleges and associated organisations and is currently a Director of The Assessment Network Ltd (IiP centre for Eastern England). He is responsible for the leadership, management and development of the College.
John Fowl
Clerk to the Boardof Corporation
John Fowl, Clerk to the Board of Corporation, has worked in FE since 1978 and holds the Clerks’ qualification (FE Certificate ICSA) with 30 years of Clerking experience. He has held a number of Senior Management positions in three FE Colleges, including, most recently, that of Director of Support Services at Hertford Regional College where he oversaw its transition to Incorporated status. Since 2002 he has worked solely as a Clerk for a number of Colleges, and has been Chair of both the National Clerks’ Network and the Clerks’ Network in the Eastern Region. An Accredited Trainer, he has undertaken training at 17 Colleges throughout the country, assisting with the induction of new Clerks.
John Campling
Support Staff Governor
John Campling the College’s Support Staff Governor, has lived in various parts of the UK but for the majority of the last 34 years in South Woodham Ferrers and Wickford. From 1969 to 1996 he worked firstly for a London stockbrokers, a leading merchant bank, a unit trust management company in London and Jersey and finally the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Investment Management Company both in Edinburgh and London. The positions held were from clerk to manager. From 2000 to date he has worked for Chelmsford College firstly in register audit and results and for the last three years in the examinations and results department. He has extensive experience of financial investment management administration. Heather Clarke
Teaching Staff Governor
Heather Clarke is the College’s Staff Governor (Academic). Heather has lived in Chelmsford since 1988 and has been a lecturer at Chelmsford College since 1989. She has taught on A Level, GCSE and on BTEC courses in Business and Travel and Tourism related subjects. Heather is currently the Curriculum Team Leader at the College for Level one and two Business Courses.
Gill Adams
Gill joined the governors in 2011, with a special interest in quality issues. She has spent her working life in education and is still passionate about it. Initially she taught history and politics in Chepstow then moved to Romford for her first promotion. The rest of her career was based in London. Deputy headship in an 11-18 mixed comprehensive was followed by Inspector posts for LEAs and Ofsted; staff training and leadership development roles and projects to build cross-professional partnerships with companies like Lane 4. Outside work she loves to cook (especially historical recipes), read, visit the theatre, watch films and travel… but most of all she loves talking to her daughter. Angelika Baxter
Trained as a teacher, Angelika has co-ordinated provision for Black and other Minority Ethnic students in educational settings since 1991. She now works as a Local Authority Adviser, developing good BME/EAL practice in schools and other institutions across Mid and South Essex in response to the county-wide increase in minority ethnic communities. Her brief includes advice to schools, statistical analysis, Headteachers’ briefings, CPD delivery and Race Equality casework. As an RE teacher, Angelika has served on the Religious Education Council of England & Wales since 1996. She has also participated in steering the nationwide REsilience project, which links RE to the prevention of violent extremism.
Phil Bridge
Phil Bridge joined the Royal Navy aged 15. He completed a full and active career which included a total of 15 years at sea. During his service he was selected for a 3 year exchange service with the Royal Netherlands Navy, where he instructed/advised on Aircraft Control. In 1991 he entered the Royal Naval Careers Service and relocated his family to Chelmsford. As the Office Manager of the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Careers Office in Chelmsford, he was responsible for all recruiting matters within the Essex boundaries. He retired from the Royal Navy in 2009. He has a keen interest in ‘Public Services’. Married to Hanny (Dutch) for 39 years, they have 2 sons and 3 grandsons. Graham Evans
Dr Graham Evans having studied chemistry at university, worked as an industrial research scientist before switching to a career in human resource management. Over the years, he has gained experience in the photographic, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. He has had a long association with Chelmsford, having served in the 1980s as a local councillor. He still retains an involvement in politics, but his other interests include Germany and the German language, and the history and architecture of London. He is also a keen gardener. Ray Joy
Ray Joy has lived and worked in Chelmsford most of his working life. In 1972 he started working at Essex County Council. Since then he has had periods of employment, while gaining promotion, in Cambridgeshire, Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford and at Brentwood Borough Council, where he worked for 10 years as Audit Manager. He currently works at Chelmsford Borough Council as the Audit, Performance and Investigations Manager. Michael Lager
Michael Lager has lived in Witham with his family since 1969. After reading maths and law at Clare College, Cambridge, he trained with Arthur Andersen as a chartered accountant and held a number of accounting and finance posts in industry before setting up as a financial consultant locally. He retired from active business in 2002. He has served on Braintree District Council for over 20 years. He is also a member of the Witham Town Council and is the local County Councillor. At Essex County Council he chairs the Audit Committee. Michael also serves as a school governor. Michael's other interests include playing bridge, watching opera and drama, walking and occasional sailing. Charles Myers
Charles Myers has been a Governor since 2002. In August 1999 he retired from teaching Physics after 39 years in Secondary schools and a College of F.E. In 1993 he became responsible for producing the F.E. College’s statistics to support its funding bid. This previous experience of F.E helps him to contribute to improving the quality of the student experience at the College. From 1987 to 2007 Charles served on Brentwood Council and currently Chairs the Audit Committee where his experience of Local Government Audit is invaluable. Bill Pigram
Bill Pigram, having been brought up in nearby Bishops Stortford, moved to Chelmsford in 1967 and soon after began working at the Marconi Company in the Maintenance Engineering Department. During his 19 years there, he established a special interest in their craft apprentice training facilities. In 1988 he became the Regional Officer for the Engineering and Electrical Union with special responsibilities for encouraging employers to provide engineering and technical apprenticeships of the highest standards. His regional responsibilities were then extended to oversee UK wide Ministry of Defence civilian workshop apprentice training, regularly visiting RAF and Army bases, together with Navy dockyards. Although now retired, he still enjoys his participation in the work of the College. Jonathan Swan
Jonathan Swan is director of skills and knowledge transfer at Operis TRG Limited, a specialist financial modelling firm based in the City of London. He is author of the standard textbook on financial modelling, and is a Visiting Fellow at the Ashcroft International Business School at Anglia Ruskin University. Jonathan has considerable expertise in corporate governance and audit and compliance and has served on the boards of a number of educational institutions and voluntary sector organisations. He lives in Chelmsford with his family and bagpipes. Liz Wood
Elizabeth Wood, Liz has spent most of her teaching career in adult education, teaching a variety of history and politics courses. She has also undertaken much examining work and was a senior examiner for ‘A’ level government and politics. Liz has been involved in the voluntary sector and has been a tutor, advisor and social policy co-ordinator at Brentwood Citizens’ Advice Bureau, also attending courses on employment, debt, benefits, housing and consumer affairs. Since retiring 2 years ago, Liz has obtained a Diploma in the History of Medicine and does voluntary archival work. Khadijah Zaidi
Khadijah Zaidi, has been a Governor since early 2011. She has lived in Chelmsford since 2009 after living in London all her life. She worked in healthcare regulation for six years working on investigations into service failure and a national review of mental health hospitals. Khadijah took a career break in 2007 to study Arabic in Egypt and to perform the Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). Her most recent post was as Head of Fundraising for the Muslim Youth Helpline. She is currently looking after her one year old son and completing a distance learning course.
