Governor Appointment Procedure

All governors are appointed by the Full Board of the Corporation after it has taken advice and noted the recommendations of the Search Committee. The exception is when the Learning and Skills Council exercises its statutory right to appoint up to two additional members in special circumstances.

1 At the specific instruction of the Search Committee, or as required to replenish the waiting list of individuals interested in future Corporation membership, the Clerk may invite applications via advertisement in the local press or by written invitation to suitable local businesses, local authorities and/or community groups. Potential candidates may also be personally introduced by current member(s).
2 All Applicants for membership of the Corporation are required to submit a CV and complete a skills audit form.
3 All applications for Corporation membership, howsoever introduced, will be assessed impartially against criteria identified, and as amended from time to time, by the Search Committee. At the time that an appropriate vacancy falls due, the Clerk and the Chair of the Search Committee will carry out an initial assessment of all available applications kept on the waiting list.
4 If, as a result of the initial assessment, one or more applications suggest potentially suitable Applicant(s) to fulfil the current requirements for Corporation membership, the Chair of the Search Committee or, at the request of the Chair, the Clerk will contact the Applicant(s) for an informal discussion. The CV will be discussed and the individual(s) will be briefly appraised of the role, responsibilities and commitment required of a Governor.
5 On the instructions of the Chair of the Search Committee, the Clerk will then:
  • verify as far as possible the information provided by the Applicant(s); and
  • invite the Applicant(s) to attend a meeting of the Search Committee.
6 At the meeting, the Applicant(s) will be advised of the Corporation’s Committee structure and the College management structure. They will be invited to discuss their relevant professional and personal experiences and their perception of how they would contribute to the sound governance of the College.
7 After the meeting with the Applicant(s), the Search Committee will decide upon the advice/recommendation to be given to the Corporation.
8 The Report of the Search Committee will be included in the agenda of the next Corporation meeting where, if appropriate, its recommendation(s) will be considered.
9 If Corporation approval is received, then the Clerk will write to the Applicant(s) requesting formal acceptance of Corporation membership and arranging for their initial induction session with the Clerk.
10 Following written acceptance of governorship, and satisfactory completion of the initial induction, the new appointee(s) will be deemed a member of the Corporation.
