Frequently Asked Questions
What support will my son/daughter/ward get at college?
The level and type of support given depends on the individual needs of each student. It is available both in and out of class time. Support assistants are allocated to a class group and accompany them to all their classes throughout the day.
Is support available for break and lunchtimes?
Yes. Support Assistants are on duty in the Restaurant and coffee bar.
What is done to help my son/daughter/ward find their way around?
At the beginning of the year students will be met in reception in the mornings and shown to their classroom. For some courses the students are timetabled into the same room for the first lesson every morning to enable them to form a routine and help them to find their way around.
During induction week students take part in several fun activities designed to help them find their way around.
Learning support assistants accompany students around the college especially at the beginning of the year to help them establish their surroundings.
All members of staff are required to wear a name badge. Students are told to speak to someone wearing a college badge who will help them if they become lost or worried.
What about bullying?
Bullying and behaviour which is likely to disturb the life of the college will not be accepted. It is very rare but anyone suspected of bullying is subject to the disciplinary process which may result exclusion from the college.
What subjects will my son/daughter/ward study?
This depends on the course being studied. Please see individual course leaflets in this pack.
Will they go on trips out of college?
Yes. Student trips out of college form a large part of the enrichment for the course and are linked to the curriculum. These can be local walks into town or around the Moulsham area. Trips are also organised for further afield.
Trips are subject to approval from the Head of School and the Principal. A risk assessment is carried out for every trip.
Parents and guardians will be informed by letter of all trips undertaken. At times trips out incur some cost but this is kept to a minimum.
Will my son/daughter/ward be able to leave the college premises unaccompanied?
We ask your permission for students to leave the building unaccompanied and students are required to tell someone they are going out.
We are a mainstream college and we cannot lock the doors, if we know a student is likely to wander out we can take the appropriate action to prevent this happening.
It is usual for students to stay in groups at break and lunchtimes and it is unlikely that someone will leave the premises. Procedures are in place to deal with the situation if a student cannot be found.
How will my son/daughter/ward progress after their course?
Looking at progression opportunities forms part of a student’s tutorial programme. Various options are investigated and discussed. These will be discussed with parents and/or guardians at our parent’s evenings when there will be an opportunity to meet and talk to some specialist progression providers. Connexions advisors are also available to discuss progression opportunities.
