Redevelopment Plans at Chelmsford College
After having to shelve plans for a new college build with the LSC funding evaporating, we are investing £10million in redeveloping our two existing main sites, starting from June 2011.
On the Moulsham Street site, the electrical and engineering block and the art and design studios, which are 50 years old and in a poor state, will be demolished. A new 2-storey art, design and media block will be built at the back of the building incorporating a green communal space. A new reception area will also be built on this site, which will incorporate a new open-space internet café.
At Princes Road, a new 2-storey block will be built at the front of the current building to house the electrical and engineering departments. This will mean around 300 students currently based at Moulsham Street campus will now be at Princes Road, where there are more parking spaces.
The work at Princes Road will start this summer and is scheduled for completion in January 2012, with the rest of the redevelopment work due to finish later that year.
When we were graded by Ofsted in 2009, we were graded good which we were very pleased with, but the condition of some of our buildings was an area that was highlighted as limiting us from getting the outstanding grade. Hopefully with these self-funding redevelopment plans we will be able to offer even more to our students, who deserve the very best we can offer.
Key Dates for this summer are:
- 27th June - work starts on the new Electrical/Engineering Block at Princes Road
- 4th July - work starts on the external works for the new Moulsham Street Reception Area
- 11th July - work starts on the MUGA (Multi Use Gaming Area) at Princes Road
- 25th July - HR and Finance move to Dovedale House at Moulsham Street
